Responsibilities
Privates fought more than everyone else. When they fought they fought together as a whole and almost never alone.
Corporals served in either the regimental color guard or the individual companies of the regiment. Unless they were in the color guard they were in the line of battle. Corporals would often guide the privates when their guidance was needed.
Sergeants served in either the regimental color guard or in the individual companies of the regiment. Being in this rank you could be either a first sergeant, ordnance sergeant, or a quartermaster sergeant.
Infantry sergeants were either in or behind the line of battle. They helped guide the troops by and keep them where they were supposed to be.
Sergeant Majors kept the reports for their regiments. If he was in battle he was behind the line of battle, there to guide the troop movement.
Lieutenants were second in command of the infantry, cavalry companies, and artillery batteries. The infantry lieutenants helped the captains by helping to guide the troop movements and their firings.
Captains were in command of a company of either infantry, cavalry, or and artillery battery. They also led their company to battle correctly by giving those commands pertaining to their movements and fighting. They worked together with the other companies in the regiment.
Majors were third in command in an infantry, Calvary, or an artillery regiment. Also they helped the colonel with their other duties, in a battle an Infantry major led regimental attack. He was always at the front with the color guard. If either the lieutenant or the colonel were hurt or killed then the major would helpfully take command of the regiment.
Lieutenant colonels were second in command of an infantry, Calvary, or artillery regiment. He helped the colonel where his help was needed, including helping to lead the regiment in battle. He would take over if the colonel was killed.
Colonels command an infantry, cavalry, or artillery regiment. He himself had to take his regiment into battle to make sure that they didn’t do anything wrong. This is why a lot of the time they were killed in battle.
